Proof That the Pattern Starts From Within | Why You Keep Repeating the Same Relationship Patterns

Aug 4
5 min read

Imagine this...

You've been out of a relationship for years.

You've done the work. You've taken time to heal. You've learned from your past. Maybe you've even gone to therapy. Finally, you feel ready to put yourself back out there.

Then you meet someone.

At first, they feel like a breath of fresh air.

They're attentive. The conversations flow naturally. They seem different from anyone you've dated before. For the first time in a long time, you begin imagining what this relationship could become.

But as time goes on, something starts to feel... familiar.

Not because this person is exactly like your ex.

Not because the relationship looks the same.

But because somewhere along the way, you're experiencing the same emotions you worked so hard to leave behind.

The same anxiety.

The same overthinking.

The same fear of rejection.

The same feeling of questioning your worth.

Eventually, you find yourself asking the question so many people silently carry:

"Why does this keep happening to me?"

If that question sounds familiar, you're not alone.

In fact, it's one of the most common questions I hear from clients who walk through the doors of Color Me Therapy.

They're not just heartbroken.

They're confused.

"I thought I healed."

"I thought this time would be different."

"Why do I keep ending up here?"

Those questions aren't signs that you've failed.

They're invitations to look deeper.

At Color Me Therapy, this is often where our work begins. We don't start by asking, "What's wrong with you?" We begin by asking, "What pattern has been quietly shaping your life?" During your first session, we begin identifying the beliefs, experiences, and attachment patterns influencing the way you relate to yourself and others.

The Pattern Is Trying to Tell You Something

Most of us naturally look outside ourselves for the answer.

"If I could just meet a healthier person..."

"If my partner communicated better..."

"If my family finally understood me..."

"If I could just stop attracting the wrong people..."

Sometimes those things absolutely matter.

Relationships affect us.

Life experiences shape us.

Other people's choices impact us.

But if the same emotions, struggles, or relationship dynamics continue showing up in different seasons with different people, there may be another question worth asking.

What if the pattern didn't start around you?

What if it started within you?

Not because you're the problem.

But because your internal world influences how you experience your external world.

Beneath Every Pattern Is a System

At Color Me Therapy, we believe behaviors are only the surface.

Underneath every recurring pattern is an internal system.

Think of it like the operating system on your phone.

You don't see it every day, but it's constantly influencing how everything else functions.

Your internal system has been shaped by years of experiences, relationships, beliefs, disappointments, victories, losses, and the meaning you've attached to each of those moments.

Over time, it quietly begins answering questions like:

  • Am I safe?

  • Can people be trusted?

  • Am I enough?

  • Will people stay?

  • Do I have to earn love?

  • Is conflict dangerous?

  • Do my needs matter?

Most of us never intentionally chose those answers.

We simply learned them.

And once they're learned, they begin influencing how we think, feel, and respond without us even realizing it.

If you've ever wondered what therapy actually looks like, our approach to Individual Therapy is centered around helping you understand these deeper patterns—not simply manage symptoms.

Your Brain Isn't Trying to Hurt You

One of the most freeing things to understand is this:

Your brain is designed to protect you.

The challenge is that it often mistakes familiar for safe.

If inconsistency was familiar, consistency may feel uncomfortable.

If you had to earn love growing up, healthy love may actually feel unfamiliar.

If criticism was common, encouragement may feel difficult to believe.

Your brain isn't trying to sabotage you.

It's trying to protect you using what it has learned.

The problem is that what once protected you may now be preventing you from experiencing the healthy relationships and fulfilling life you truly desire.

The Pattern Isn't Your Identity

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is believing that because a pattern exists, something must be wrong with them.

That's simply not true.

Your patterns tell a story.

They reveal what you've learned.

They reveal what you've adapted to.

They reveal what your nervous system has practiced over and over again.

But they do not determine who you are.

People-pleasing isn't your identity.

Overthinking isn't your identity.

Hyper-independence isn't your identity.

Avoidance isn't your identity.

They're strategies. And just that.

Strategies that once served a purpose.

The beautiful thing about strategies is that they can be replaced with healthier ones.

Awareness Is Where Healing Begins

This is why therapy is about so much more than changing behavior.

You can know you overthink.

You can know you struggle with boundaries.

You can know you keep choosing emotionally unavailable partners.

But knowing isn't the same as changing.

Real transformation begins when you understand why the pattern developed in the first place.

Because once you understand what your pattern has been protecting, you no longer have to fight yourself.

You begin working with compassion instead of shame.

Instead of asking,

"What's wrong with me?"

You begin asking,

"What is this pattern trying to protect me from?"

That single question changes everything.

Want to Go Even Deeper?

This is one of the reasons I created The Blank Canvas Effect™.

So many people know what keeps happening.

Very few understand why.

The Blank Canvas Effect™ was designed to help you identify the deeper beliefs, attachment patterns, emotional wounds, and protective strategies that quietly shape your relationships, decisions, and view of yourself.

It's more than a workshop.

It's an opportunity to finally make sense of the patterns you've been living.

If you've ever found yourself saying,

"I know something needs to change, but I can't figure out what it is,"

The Blank Canvas Effect™ was created for you.

Lasting Change Starts From Within

At Color Me Therapy, we believe healing goes beneath the surface.

We're not just interested in helping you communicate better or set healthier boundaries.

We're interested in helping you understand the internal system driving those behaviors.

Because when the system changes...

The pattern changes.

When the pattern changes...

Your relationships begin to change.

Your decisions begin to change.

The way you see yourself begins to change.

Eventually, your life begins to change.

Not because your circumstances became perfect.

But because you're no longer living from the same internal operating system.

That's the work we do every day.

A Question to Sit With This Week

The next time you notice yourself reacting strongly to a situation, pause and ask yourself:

"Is this reaction coming from what's happening right now...or from a pattern I've practiced for years?"

You don't have to judge the answer.

Simply becoming aware of it is the first step toward changing it.
